Off the Top Rope

Every Wednesday night in Memphis, three gargantuan friends - Johnny, Knox and Dusty - get good and messed up on the finest drugs the city has to offer and square off against each other in a wrestling ring in one of the city's oldest venues. For those few hours, these working class heroes ascend to God like status. They are envied by men, wanted by woman and have complete control of the room. It's heaven.

Until, not unlike Cinderella, midnight comes and they slink back to the everyday grind that is their normal lives.

It's 1984 and the world of wrestling is still family owned and very regional. The borders have been drawn over years and no organization dares to break away from tradition. That is until Vernon Spencer of the River City Wrestling Association decides to defy his father (and owner of the RCWA) P.W. Spencer and make a play for a national audience. His radical take on the sport pushes it away from its humble "organized bar fight" days and towards the "spectacle" he knows it is. Vernon is going to swim against the current but, despite his detractors, he believes that he's right and knows that the first organization to get to a national audience first is going to become multi-millionaires.

Vernon wants to be that man.

Now the lives of Johnny, Knox and Dusty are about to radically change only they don't know it just yet. Vernon has been secretly cultivating personalities, fans and stories to break away from tradition and make his mark on the world. What follows is the often messy growth of a business, the quickly evolving lives of soon to be stars and the worst of the 1980s excess.
